Osaka MICE Business Alliance seminar at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka
Osaka MICE Business Alliance members gathered to discuss sustainability and model cases in developing unique venues.
On November 21, 2022, the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau (OCTB) hosted a seminar for its Osaka MICE Business Alliance members. Held at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, this seminar was a chance to showcase the museum as a model for as a unique venue for meetings and events. Typically closed on Mondays, the museum made special preparations for us to make use of their meeting space, and opened an exhibit for a limited time just for our Business Alliance members.
The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau operates the Osaka MICE Business Alliance , a collective of hotels, venues, restaurants, entertainers, caterers, design professionals, and other businesses within the meetings and events industry. The Business Alliance strives to provide a one-stop service so that meeting and event planners can find success and ease in hosting their international events in Osaka.
Opening Remarks
Attended by 70 people, the seminar opened with remarks from OCTB Director of MICE Policy Yoshikazu Tanaka, who emphasized on why it is so vital for the event industry to engage in sustainability. Tanaka introduced the SDGs for MICE Sustainable Event Evaluation System, which the OCTB launched in June 2022. This evaluation system encourages event organizers, attendees, service providers, and local governments to work together to implement sustainable practices at meeting and events.
Seminars
A Model Case for the SDGs for MICE Sustainable Event Evaluation System
Masaki Maekawa of the Asia-Pacific Trade Center (ATC) was present to showcase the evaluation system’s inaugural implementation at the Theo Jansen Exhibit, held July 9 – September 25 at ATC Hall. Maekawa elaborated on the evaluation system’s process from first application to final report, and how the overall system contributed to ATC’s goals and initiatives in sustainability.
Model Cases for Unique Venues
Eriko Tateishi of the OCTB MICE Promotion Department gave a presentation on what is like to use a historically and culturally significant location as a unique venue for meetings and events, and why it is so important. Tateishi gave many examples of unique venues, including the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, and model cases of their usage.
An Introduction to the Museum
Yasushi Ota of the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, gave an overview of the museum, which just recently opened in February 2022. Ota discussed the museum’s current initiatives, and also presented cases of other events using the museum as a unique venue.

Toulouse-Lautrec and Mucha: Ten Years in Paris
Museum curator Naoko Hirai gave a brief introduction to one of the museum’s current exhibits, titled ”Toulouse-Lautrec and Mucha: Ten Years in Paris,” and described the two artists’ history. At the conclusion of the exhibition, attendees were given private access to see the exhibit, an exclusive opportunity granted by the museum while it was closed to the public for the day.

Networking Time
A coffee break was planned among the seminar’s proceedings, where members of the Business Alliance had a chance to network and chat. Coffee was provided by the museum’s on-site restaurant and café, Musée KARATO.
About the Venue
With planning for the museum beginning as early as 1990, the Nakanoshima Museum of Art finally opened its doors in February 2022, becoming a distinct symbol of the Nakanoshima area. The museum has already been ranked as one of the trendiest locations to visit in Japan from several domestic polls.
